Chinnamastika means ‘severed head’. Legend has it that to calm Lord Shiva and stop his Tandava, Lord Vishnu severed the corpse of Maa Sati into 51 pieces and scattered over in Indian subcontinent and Sati’s feet fell over this place making this place of utmost importance from 51 Shakti Peeths. Pandit Mai Dass an ardant devotee of goddess Chandi built the temple after the Goddess residing there revealed herself to the pandit. The goddess at Chintpurni defeated demons but to quench the blood thirst of his two companions -Jaya and Vijaya, cut off her own head.
