View of Leh Valley

Region of Ladakh is part of Northern Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir and is a place like no other. The region is one of India’s least dense and sparsely populated. It’s terrain is unique not only to India, but in many ways unique to many countries in the World. It’s main district Leh is India’s second biggest and along with Kargil make up two important connecting districts to this part of the World.

People and Culture of Ladakh

People of Ladakh are mostly from Indo Aryan & Tibetan descent with history, culture & lifestyle closely resembling those cultures. Ladakhi people have for most part been disconnected from the Modern World.

Only in the last 2 decades with the World taking prominent notice and tourism making clear ground, Ladakh and Ladakhi people have begun looking towards a highly promising future. People here are special in many ways for their unique conservation methods, distinct Ethinicity, resoluteness & preserving their faith in Tibetan Buddhism. Though the region falls in a dangerous area between sensitive borders of Pakistan and China, you don’t feel the tension nor witness any cross border activities.

Best Time to Visit Ladakh

Leh Sightseeing

Leh is the erstwhile capital of Ladakh and centre of all major connectivity to this beautiful barren land. Connected via Air from Delhi & Road from Srinagar and Manali, Leh though relatively new to the Modern World is one of the most bustling cities in J&K. Its ascent on the World tourist Map has promised to increase its Size, Populace, Business & Tourist activities. Airport is a 10 mins drive from the town center with all the major outstation roads from and into Leh divide from here.

Most of the Hotels in Leh are modern with touch of traditional building designs. Due to space constraints, most hotels cannot be categorized into 4 star or 5 Star properties, but you can be assured of all the amenities, convenience & comfort that any modern Hotel in India can offer.

Local sightseeing includes War Memorial, Japanese built Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Spituk Monastery and Namgyal Monastery amongst many others. You can easily while away a day in Leh with spectacular views from all the main sightseeing points as most of them are built on higher ground. Young shoppers can find all Tibetan stuff that is very appealing and known for its timeless Fashion.

High Altitude Passes

People travelling to Ladakh have Pangong Tso Lake high in the Itinerary, especially after it has been popularized by the film 3 Idiots. Besides Pangong Tso Lake, Tso Moriri & Tsokar are other lakes of special Interest. The supposedly highest Motorable pass in the World “Khardung la” plays hosts to vehicles trying to cross the pass to reach Nubra Valley. Similarly Chang La pass with almost similar height helps tourist cross over to Pangong Tso Lake. Sham Valley too is added in the Itinerary for its many Monasteries, Rivers & interesting Natural phenomenons.

Pangong Tso Lake

Pangong Tso Lake is a fantastic one day return trip from Leh. Overnight camping is available for those who want to take it slow. The drive from Leh is 5 Hrs that includes crisscrossing over Himalayan range, across Chang La pass and through some of the most beautiful Natural Flora and Fauna. The Lake itself is long by about 135Kms and around 5Kms wide crossing into Tibetan territory bordering across the Johnson line. Boat rides are not allowed due to security reasons. The barren mountains that surround the Lake display different colors depending on weather and time of the day. You can stay at the many camps/tents put up for overnight stays. Staying there for 2-3Hrs and returning back is also well and good.

The route to Pangong Tso Lake is Beautifully Wild. Please remember not to feed animals you see en route they are supposed to be Wild.

Sham Valley

Sham Valley is anywhere between 50KMs – 100KMs drive from Leh that includes the following: Hall of Fame War Musuem, Magnetic Hill, Likir Monastery, Rizong Monastery, Lumayuru Monastery, Alchi Monastery, Gurudwara Patthar Sahib, Confluence of Indus and Zanskar, river rafting routes, resort at Uley Ethinic resort, Moon Valley, Basgo Palace, etc. Some of the Oldest and historic Monasteries are situated along this route. Any stay for the night that is required here can be arranged at Alchi or Lekir.

One day return trip is advisable. Few people prefer to drive all the way to Mulbekh in Kargil district and stay overnight there. If you are driving from Srinagar into Leh, you can follow all the mentioned site in 2 days with overnight stay in Kargil.

Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley is the most exciting excursion from Leh especially for the two humped Bactrian camel ride. To reach this part , you’ll have to drive over Khardung La pass (supposedly the World’s highest motorable drive). Two prominent towns are Diskit and Hundar that cater to most of the activities in Nubra Valley. Diskit Monastery has one of the biggest Maitreya (Future Buddha) Statues in one of the most spectacular settings. While you visit the Monastery, you can wonder at the striking scene of the Valley Landscape that includes the towns of Diskit, Hundar, River Shyok. There is desert phenomenon between Hundar and Diskit that makes the view even more dramatic.

Further down after Hundar is the town of Turtuk after which the border line with Pakistan starts. An overnight stay at one of the camps in Hundar is highly recommended. Tents are modern and stylized to suit your conveniences.

Tso Moriri Tsokar Lake

Tso Moriri is India’s largest High altitude lake situated in the beautiful Changthang Plateau inhabited by Changspa Tribesmen. It’s classified as remnant Lake with its basin having no major outlet. Ladakhis consider the lake sacred. With rich flora and fauna in the whole of this Plateau, a trip to this overland will be an enriched experience. To reach here from Leh with a return trip would take 2 days. The lake can also be reached from Pangong Tso and its route is reputed to be Ladakh’s most beautiful drive. Accommodation isn’t available at the lake but in Karzok Village. Karzok has a beautiful Monastery that is 400 years old and the village is. The Monastery has a decent history and make sure to learn the Tibettan Buddhist Influence in the region.

Tsokar is a much smaller Lake that is visited along with Tso Moriri either on way back to Leh or enroute to Manali.

Monasteries

The most distinct aspect of region of Ladakh is the many beautiful Monasteries (Gompas) & Stupas that are dotted across its landscape. Most of them are on the foundation of Tibetan Buddhism founded by Guru Padmasambhava and run by many different schools. It is testament to Ladakhi Faith & dedication that most Monasteries including very old ones have been preserved and maintained. While some are in bad shape, full efforts and Artistic fervor is being mustered to restore them to their glory.

Some of the most notable Monasteries include Hemis, Thikse, Stakna, Likir, Lumayuru, Alchi, Diskit amongst others.
