One of the oldest cities of India, Pushkar is located down the North of Ajmer. It is hoem to various ghats and temples. Pushkar meaning “Lotus Flower” which is said to be the seat of Brahma Ji, creater of universe in Hinduism. Legend has it that when evil demon Vajra Nabha killed Brahma’s children, he struck him with his lotus whose impact killed him and its three petals fell on earth, one of them turned to pushkar lake. Hence it is the most mportant of all holy places for Hindus. And thus the favourite place for devotees. Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair, held in the month of November. This is one of very few places in Rajasthan you would find which isn’t famous because of a fort. A soothing and calm place with the glitter of spirituality makes Pushkar a must visit.
Pushkar LakeThe Hindu Scriptures mention the lake as “Tirtha Raj”, meaning the king of all pilgrimage sites. Surrounded by 52 bathing Ghats and over 400 temples with series of stairs, this lake is semi-circular in shape. No pilgrimage is said to be complete without a dip in this holy lake since it is one of the five sacred dhams for devout Hindus.
Brahma TempleThe only temple in the world dedicated to Brahma, nestled in Pushkar Valley, this intricating temple is said to be 2000 years olds. The temple is beautifully decorated with silver coins and houses images of Lord Brahm. The chanting mantras and aarti conducted here everyday before sunrise and aftre sunset can be heard from any part of Pushkar city.
Pushkar Camel FairA grand 14 day fair organised every year for 14 days in November during the holi time from Kartik Ekadashi to Kartik Poornima is India’s greatest tribal gathering.More than 40,000 people visit the fair to enjoy Rajasthani culture and cousine. Interesting cometitions like “longest moustache”, “Matka tod” are also held at the fair.
Gurudwara Singh SabhaLocated in the east of Pushkar,Gurudwara Singh Sabha was built in the 19th century to commemorate the visits of first and last sikh gurus.
